Hardwood Flooring Trends 2022-2023

Hardwood Flooring Trends 2022-2023

Every year interior design trends change. Hardwood flooring trends are no exception.

A floor must meet several requirements: the right color, the right grain, the right species, the right size of the boards, etc. The choice remains a matter of taste, but often the practical side surpasses the aesthetic requirements!

You will see that the trends are greatly influenced by these factors. To guide you in your decision, we interviewed one of our best salespeople, Samuel Hirsch.

Based on his experience with customers and designers, he presents the different 2022 trends. For the curious, he even revealed his predictions for the year 2023!

Wood species trends

Chêne blanc Mirage Engineered, Plancher d'ingénierie.

Without a doubt, the most popular species of wood for the year 2022 is oak! At least, it's our best-selling essence at Barwood Pilon. I noticed a general trend for floors with character. Unlike maple or cherry, oak floors have a more pronounced grain.

?? Note that a floor with character such as white oak or red oak will tend to be more resistant to wear.

Color trends

This year it is the paler colors that have the star. In fact, I've noticed that the trend is all about anything that comes close to the natural state of wood. Hence also the craze for oak floors with character. We are far from the dark colors that were popular a few years ago.

Wood Grain Trends

Chêne blanc Hula Hoop de Mirage

You can understand that the most popular wood grain is a grain with, again, character. We like a more pronounced grain to give a touch of rustic to a more modern decor.

?? Note that a hardwood floor with knots is not synonymous with poor quality. This is a preconceived idea that I often have to deconstruct with my clients. In fact, the quality depends on several other factors, but especially on the manufacturer.

Plank width trend

For the width of the boards, everyone wants wide! Open areas are still relevant and wide planks add to this effect of grandeur. We sell a lot of boards with 3 to 5 inches. Mirage brand Tru Balance technology even offers boards up to 7 ¾ inches!

Hardwood Flooring Trend Forecast 2023

From hearsay I've had from designers shopping with us, in 2023 thinner blades will be making a comeback! Our most forward-thinking designers are leaning more and more towards 2 ¼ blades.

Otherwise, for the rest, the trend should stick to colors and finishes that are closest to natural wood. In general, we observe that the technical aspect prevails over the aesthetics. Glossy and dark floors make flaws appear much more noticeable. The trend leans much more on the practical side with pale colors, matte and textured finishes.

There is also the location that will influence the look of the boards chosen. For cabins in the open north, we see a trend of very long and wide planks. For properties in Montreal, we see a trend more towards thin planks, reminiscent of the cachet of old floors.
